Women's College Flag Football Is Coming to Pinellas County
Eckerd College has announced that women's flag football will become the school's 19th varsity sport, with competition scheduled to begin in spring 2028.
The St. Petersburg college announced the new program on September 10, 2026. Eckerd also said a national search for the program's first head coach would begin immediately.
The addition is especially notable locally because Eckerd says it will become the first intercollegiate flag football team in Pinellas County.

Why the Eckerd Announcement Matters in Tampa Bay
Eckerd's announcement connects a rapidly growing high school sport in the Tampa Bay area with a new college opportunity close to home.
According to Eckerd College, more than 100 high schools in the Tampa Bay region already host varsity flag football teams. Until now, Pinellas County did not have an intercollegiate program for those athletes to continue playing locally at the college level.
That creates a new potential pathway for athletes who have grown up playing girls flag football in the region and want to continue competing after high school.
The Program Is Scheduled to Start in Spring 2028
Eckerd plans to begin varsity competition in spring 2028. The timing places the program's first season in the same year flag football is scheduled to make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles Games.
The school has not yet announced a completed roster or first-year schedule. The immediate next step is the search for an inaugural head coach, followed by building the program ahead of its first competitive season.
College Flag Football Is Expanding Nationally
Eckerd is joining a much larger expansion of women's flag football at the college level.
In January 2026, the NCAA added women's flag football to its Emerging Sports for Women program. That designation created an official pathway for the sport to work toward NCAA championship status.
Then in May, the NCAA Committee on Access, Opportunity and Impact formally recommended legislation to create a National Collegiate Flag Football Championship. The NCAA said at the time that, if the legislation is approved by all three divisions, the first championship could be held in spring 2028.
That means Eckerd's planned launch is arriving during a period when the structure of college flag football itself could be changing quickly.
A Growing Recruiting Pipeline in Florida
Florida has already been one of the strongest high school flag football markets in the country. Adding more college programs gives high school athletes additional places to continue playing competitively without leaving the sport after graduation.
For Tampa Bay athletes specifically, the Eckerd program adds an option in St. Petersburg at a time when participation and college sponsorship are both rising.
The biggest details still to come include the first head coach, recruiting class, roster, schedule and opponents. Those announcements will give a clearer picture of how quickly Eckerd intends to build the program before spring 2028.
Flag Football's 2028 Moment Is Getting Bigger
The college expansion is happening alongside the sport's Olympic growth. Flag football will debut at LA28 with six men's national teams and six women's national teams.
