The LA28 Flag Football Field Is Taking Shape
Flag football will make its Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games, and the first countries have already secured their places in the men's and women's tournaments.
As of September 18, 2026, three of the six available spots are filled on each side. The United States is qualified in both tournaments as the host country. The first competitive Olympic berths were then awarded at the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany.

Men's Olympic Flag Football Teams Qualified So Far
United States: The U.S. men's team holds the host-country place for LA28.
Italy: Italy earned one of the two men's Olympic berths available at the 2026 IFAF World Championships by reaching the championship game. Italy finished with the silver medal after a 46-26 loss to the United States in the final.
Canada: Canada secured the other men's berth by defeating Mexico 34-26 in the bronze-medal game. That result put Canada into the first Olympic flag football tournament.
That leaves three men's positions still open in the six-team LA28 field.
Women's Olympic Flag Football Teams Qualified So Far
United States: Like the men's team, the U.S. women's team is qualified as the host nation.
Canada: Canada qualified by advancing to the women's championship game in Düsseldorf, then went one step further by defeating the United States 27-20 to win the 2026 world championship.
Mexico: Mexico claimed the second non-U.S. women's Olympic berth by beating Great Britain 20-19 in the bronze-medal game.
Three women's positions also remain open.
How Many Teams Will Play Flag Football at the 2028 Olympics?
LA28 lists a six-team men's tournament and a six-team women's tournament, meaning only 12 national teams total will compete across the two Olympic flag football events. The competition is scheduled for Exposition Park Stadium in Los Angeles.
With three countries already holding places in each field, the qualification race is now halfway complete. The limited number of spots makes every remaining qualification event especially important for national programs still trying to reach Los Angeles.
What Happens Next?
The remaining Olympic places will be decided through the rest of the LA28 qualification pathway. The International Olympic Committee has also announced an Olympic Q-Series in 2028 that includes flag football among the sports scheduled to participate.

World Championship Results Changed the Olympic Picture
The 2026 World Championships produced a significant early picture of the international game. The United States won the men's world title, Canada won the women's world title, and Italy, Canada and Mexico converted medal-round performances into Olympic qualification.
For fans, that means the LA28 field is no longer hypothetical. Half of the men's tournament and half of the women's tournament can now be identified by country, while the remaining spots will be decided over the next stages of qualification.
